What is Mazatapec?

Mazatapec (also known as Psilocybe Mayiescens) is a Mexican cubensis variety known for its elegant, relatively large mushrooms with light brown to golden brown caps and sturdy stems. The strain is named after the Mazatec Indians of the mountains of Oaxaca, where these mushrooms have been used for centuries in ceremonial and spiritual contexts.

Mazatapec delivers powerful, clear visuals with a relatively clear headspace and a strong spiritual undertone. The cultivation is relatively simple and suitable for beginners. A 1200 cc kit yields an average of 300–400 grams of fresh mushrooms over 2–3 flushes at 20–25 °C. Store the kit cool (2–4 °C) until use for optimal shelf life (up to approximately 6 months).

History of Mazatapec

The Mazatapec tribe originates from indigenous cultures in Mexico, specifically among the Mazatec people in the Oaxaca region. Psilocybin mushrooms have been used by shamans and curanderos for centuries for healing, insight, and contact with the divine. The world-renowned curandera María Sabina brought this tradition to the attention of the West in the 1950s.

In the modern cultivation community, the strain was selected and stabilized for its spiritual character, strong visuals, and reliable growth. The advent of ready-to-grow kits made it possible to grow this ancient genetics at home. Today, Mazatapec is known as a bridge between ancient ceremonial traditions and contemporary psychedelic exploration.

How do you use Mazatapec?

Growing is easy and beginner-friendly. Wash your hands thoroughly, clean the outside of the kit and fill it with lukewarm water (20 °C). Let it soak for a maximum of 5 minutes (never longer than 1 hour). Drain well, place the kit in the grow bag, add 200–250 ml of lukewarm water and seal with the paperclips.

Place the bag in a place of 20–25 °C, away from direct sunlight and heat sources. Keep the bag closed until the first pinheads appear (usually 10–20 days). Air the bag daily and mist lightly. Harvest just before the veil beneath the cap breaks by gently turning and pulling out the mushroom completely. Repeat the process for subsequent flushes.

For consumption: start low (cubensis dosage).

  • Light trip: ± 1 g dried
  • Normal trip: 1.5–2.5 g
  • Stronger trip: 2.5–3.5 g

Use in a safe, quiet and preferably meditative setting.
